As temperatures rise this summer, it’s the perfect opportunity to take your fitness outdoors and enjoy longer days and fresh air. Ditch the treadmill and try an outdoor stair workout that challenges your cardio and strength while letting you soak up the sunshine. Our Summer Stairs Challenge is simple, effective, and designed to push you safely toward better fitness.
What you need: access to a long staircase or stadium steps—ideally an outdoor high school or college stadium.
Frequency and duration: Aim to hit the stairs three times per week for 20–30 minutes per session. Expect some muscle soreness at first; that’s normal and will fade as you adapt. The full-body benefits make it worth the effort.
Getting started: Begin by walking up the stairs until your breathing and stride feel comfortable. When you’re ready, pick up the pace and run short sections. Use a railing if available for balance, especially when transitioning speed or recovering between sets.
The Workout: Perform the circuit below in sequence. Start with five circuits per session and add one additional circuit each time you visit the stadium until you reach 20 circuits total. Always warm up and stretch before beginning.
- Walk briskly up the stairs, taking two steps at a time—progress to running when you’re comfortable.
- Walk down the stairs at a controlled pace to recover.
- Tricep dips using a stair edge or bench—20 reps.
- Walk fast up the stairs again.
- Walk down the stairs slowly and deliberately.
- Push-ups with hands on a lower or mid stair—10 reps (modify as needed).
- Repeat the sequence for the prescribed number of circuits.
Form tips: Keep your core engaged during stair climbs and when performing dips and push-ups. For tricep dips, keep your shoulders down and elbows close to your body. For push-ups, maintain a straight line from head to heels; modify by placing knees on the ground or using a higher stair if needed.
