Episode 41: Clemmie Hooper — NHS Midwife, Author & Mum of Daughters

My guest today is Clemmie Hooper.

Known online as Mother of Daughters, Clemmie created the widely read blog Gas and Air. Trained as an NHS midwife, her first book, How to Grow a Baby and Push It Out, proved hugely popular — it went to three reprints before publication — and has supported thousands of expectant parents worldwide. She has recently released her second book, A Journal of How to Grow a Baby.

Clemmie is the mother of four daughters and advocates for a more honest portrayal of parenthood on social media. Her frank, warm approach has resonated with readers and followers who appreciate realistic, practical guidance during pregnancy and early parenthood.

Much of my work involves preparing meals for new and expectant parents: filling fridges and freezers with nourishing, ready-to-eat food so they don’t have to worry about cooking when time and energy are limited. I was therefore particularly keen to talk with this week’s guest about how she balances raising four children with a busy professional life, including writing books and maintaining an active online presence.

I enjoy interviewing people from the food world, but I also love meeting inspiring individuals from other fields. Conversations with guests like Clemmie reveal not only the food that shapes their lives but also the practical routines, values and small comforts that sustain them.

Desert island dish:

A truly generous breakfast: bacon and chorizo, avocado, grilled tomatoes, Portobello mushrooms cooked in garlic butter, toasted white sourdough, and a dash of Tabasco. Served with a pot of tea.
