My youngest son, Carson, finished at Savannah College of Art and Design a quarter early in March 2020, which meant planning a memorable graduation celebration during the pandemic. With the official ceremony postponed until 2021, I wanted to honor his accomplishment while keeping everyone safe, so I put together several of the best graduation party ideas geared for an outdoor, socially distanced gathering.
Although the formal ceremony was delayed, we still celebrated with his closest friends outdoors. I focused on small-group stations, individually plated food, and a festive dessert table to keep things both joyful and safe. On the day of his virtual graduation, I also set up a cute candy buffet for immediate family.

The dessert buffet was quick to assemble. I used themed popcorn holders and coordinating cupcake wrappers to make the table feel extra festive without a lot of fuss.

We featured a custom graduation cake adorned with SCAD’s mascot, Art the Bee, to honor his school and add a personal touch to the dessert spread.

One of my favorite easy treats is Ferrero Rocher graduation caps — a simple, adorable topper that’s been a Pinterest favorite for years. They’re quick to assemble and always a crowd-pleaser.

For a snack that everyone loves, I made a colorful munch mix. It’s simple to prepare and looks great on a dessert table, adding variety and texture between cupcakes and cookies.

I dressed up store-bought brownies with frosting and a small candy bee for a quick, polished look. Little details like those elevate simple treats without much extra effort.

Graduation cupcake picks and wrappers helped tie the dessert colors to his school palette. They’re an inexpensive way to create a cohesive look across the table.
I also made lemon drop bees — a fun, bright cookie idea that adds personality to the spread and can be prepared ahead of time.

Graduation Decor

For the outdoor celebration, I prepared individual plates so guests could enjoy their meals safely. This approach made distribution easy and reduced shared serving pieces.

I found a simple banner to match the theme and added school photos from over the years. The result was a sentimental display that visually told his story.

I also designed a welcome sign for the yard and had it printed — a cheerful way to greet guests and set the tone for the celebration.

We are incredibly proud of Carson. Since graduating, he’s worked as a model maker on projects for television and streaming platforms. We’re excited to see what creative projects he’ll take on next.

A year later we were able to attend the in-person graduation ceremony in Atlanta, which made the long-awaited celebration even more meaningful.
