Looking for back-to-school party ideas or decorations? These simple, fun ideas are sure to be a hit.

Back to School Season
The end of August is here, and that means back-to-school season is in full swing. With Claire starting kindergarten and Charlie entering fifth grade this fall, I wanted to create a small celebration at home to mark these milestones. We make a point of celebrating every year because these moments pass so quickly. It’s amazing to look back and see how much the kids have grown—Charlie was only six months old when this blog began!

To kick things off, we threw a “One Smart Cookie” themed back-to-school party with easy treats everyone loves, including Pencil Cupcakes and Apple Pretzels. The theme is playful and simple to put together, and it makes the first day of school feel extra special.

Back to School Backdrop
A backdrop sets the tone for the party. We created a notebook-paper look using a plain white wall as the base and adding blue and pink party streamers to mimic lined paper. It’s an inexpensive, kid-friendly hack that looks great in photos.

Measure with a ruler so the blue streamers are evenly spaced, then add one pink streamer down the side to mimic the margin. The result is a polished, school-inspired backdrop you can make in minutes.

Easy School-Themed Party
With the backdrop in place, we added silver mylar balloons spelling “One Smart” and topped it off with a cookie-shaped balloon below. When we couldn’t find the exact cookie design we wanted, we customized a mylar balloon by painting it to look like a cookie—an easy way to personalize party decor.

Pro tip: If you can’t find the perfect balloon, customize one yourself. Painting a mylar balloon lets you match the theme and colors exactly.

Back to School Desserts
Treats are the highlight for kids, and we kept ours simple and fun. For the smart cookie cake, I used store-bought cookie dough baked in an ungreased cake pan to create a large round cookie. After it cooled, I decorated it with tube frosting for a face and glasses, and pink candy melts for rosy cheeks. It was playful and made the kids giggle.

Easy Pencil Cupcakes
The dessert table also featured Pencil Cupcakes made from a quick cake mix and ice cream cones as the base. Store-bought frosting keeps things simple, and small details—like wrapping the cone with pink and yellow paper and topping with a Hershey’s Kiss—turn them into cute #2 pencil replicas. They’re adorable and much easier to assemble than they look.

Cute Apple Pretzels
One of my favorite easy treats is apple pretzels. Dip pretzels in red candy melts, then add a small fondant leaf and stem for a charming apple look. They’re quick to make, kid-friendly, and perfect as a little snack for the teacher-themed table.
Pro tip: Prepare desserts the day before the party to avoid last-minute stress. Using store-bought elements or semi-homemade shortcuts saves time while keeping the presentation fun and festive.

Celebrating the New School Year
Are you planning a back-to-school celebration for your kids? Even small, heartfelt gatherings make the start of a new school year feel special. Consider printable signs you can customize at home to add personality to your space, and remember that a little creativity goes a long way.
Parties don’t need to be elaborate—what matters most is celebrating the milestone and creating memories. Enjoy the new school year and have fun celebrating the kids’ next steps. Happy back to school!
